Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 – 2020

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has released their ‘Toolkit for Organisers’ to assist organisations as to how they can contribute to the ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’.

Worldwide, road traffic deaths and injuries take the lives of nearly 1.3million people every year, and injure millions more.

The Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 – 2020 was officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Match 2010. It commenced formally on 11 May, 2011.

Key messages from the World Health Organisation throughout the decade are:

  1. Road traffic injuries are a pressing global health and development concern.
  2. Road traffic injuries can be prevented, and
  3. The Decade of Action for Road Safety is an opportunity to save millions of lives.

The above messages will be delivered through a global plan, supported by 5 ‘pillars’ or categories, with indicators developed to measure the progress in each of these areas.

The 5 pillars are:

  1. Road safety management.
  2. Safer roads and mobility
  3. Safer vehicles
  4. Safer road users, and
  5. Post crash response.
